Given that so many of us are at home at the moment, and spring is more or less here, it’s no surprise if our thoughts turn,

however reluctantly, to spring cleaning.

So, if you’re looking for something to make yourself positively glow with achievement and pride, how about cleaning the carpets?

There’s no doubt about it – carpets get a hammering: animal hair, mud, dust, food…the list goes on.

And, let’s face it, most of us just have a quick whizz round with the vacuum cleaner. But deep down we know it’s not enough, so here goes:

1. Ideally, if you’ve got access to one, wash your carpets using a domestic carpet shampoo machine, using a shampoo with stain protector if you wish. If you don’t have a machine, its time for the bucket and scrubbing brush. Just don’t over-wet it.
2. If you’ve got little dents or impressions from furniture in your carpet, rub an ice-cube over it or even leave it to melt for a while and the pile should spring back up.
3. Always treat a stain immediately – and use a carpet cleaner to lift it, but don’t be too forceful as you don’t want to push the stain further into the carpet fibres making it even harder to remove.
4. If part of your carpet is badly stained, it might be worth using a pre-treatment before you try and wash the carpet as it makes the stain easier to remove. Chocolate or mud should dry before you treat it, but food, tea or coffee or wine should be dealt with straight away while sill wet.
5. After washing, make sure that you let the carpet dry properly –and don’t get it too wet in the first place. You could even use a hair dryer for small areas.

And when it’s all clean and dry, it’s time for that quick vacuum round!
